David Burden on the Dr Zero Show

Daden MD David Burden was interviewed about virtual worlds and virtual reality on the Dr Zero YouTube show hosted by Serdar Temiz over the weekend. David's piece starts at 34:42

A lovely bit of video has just emerged that show long time friend and VR/VW colleague Dr Hanan Gazit demonstrating our old PIVOTE system (the forerunner of Trainingscapes) on Israeli TV about a decade ago! The system ran in Second Life and Open Sim, but crucially the exercise server was on the web, and training content could be edited on the web, not in Second Life. Exercises were defined by an XML file, and that heritage and approach is still in Trainingscapes - keep the exercise definition and player logic independent of the actual 3D (or 2D or audio) environment you use to experience it in. It's a logic that should let us develop a nice WebXR player for Trainingscapes relatively easily.

Using the Web Browser in Fieldscapes 1.5

As mentioned earlier Fieldscapes 1.5 now lets you create a web-browser within an exercise so tutors and students can access web resources such as videos, wikipedia, VLEs and even 3D content!

We've produced two videos to help you use it. The first just gives you an idea of what it can do (and we missed out displaying it in a pop-up!)

The second shows you how to configure it within an exercise and set up props to control it. Note that the last couple of minutes of this video (from when it starts showing Google Sheets) is the same as the first video.

Watch out for videos on other new v1.5 features.

Datascape Tutorial - Enhancing Network Graphs

Starting from where Tutorial 5 left off, this tutorial shows you how to add shapes, point colour and link colour to improve the visual look of the graph and show more aspects of the data it represents. The video then shows you how to add a web link to each point, so that it can open a URL linked to that point - here we link surnames to a Facebook people search. Finally the video shows you how to create a chord based circular mapping for the data to get an alternative visualisation.

Video Tutorials: Variables in Fieldscapes

We've posted up two new videos to show you how to use variables in Fieldscapes. More to follow as this is an important area to create more complex exercises.

The first video gives a basic introduction to variables in Fieldscapes and shows how they can be used as both an interaction counter and to drive exercise events, such as bringing an exercise to an end.

The second video shows you how to use variables to control access to the objects in scene. For instance a student could have to answer a set of questions correctly, or complete some tasks before the system reveals a key piece of information or a reward

Video Tutorial: Dynamic Filtering in Datascape2XL

This video shows how a dataset can be dynamically filtered (what we call scrubbing) by using a set of sliders to set up a range of values for a field to include, and then also being able to slide that window through the data.
